There are currently over 20 million people practicing Yoga in the United States.  It has become widely popular here starting in the 1960s, and for good reason.  It’s main benefits include increased relaxation, stress reduction, and lowered depression.  It can also help you lose weight.  The reason it helps you relax is because it slows you down and forces you to focus on your breathing.  The reason it helps you lose weight is because it can teach you a lot of psychological tricks to break the stress eating cycle.  And lastly, the reason it helps reduce depression is because it boosts your mood.  There has been extensive research done at both Harvard and Boston University to show that yogis produce a wealth of important neurotransmitters, called Gava, known to be central to mood control and regulation.
